The footballing world is counting the days until the 2 October when two European heavyweights face off against one another at Valencia’s Mestalla in a match that is widely tipped to be the biggest game of Group H. That’s right, Dutch champions Ajax will be making the long trip south for a Champion’s League clash that has all the makings of a real classic. After a strong domestic and European 2018/19 campaign, both sides will fancy their prospects of reaching the final stages of this competition.

Current form and head-to-head record
The two teams look well balanced going into this game, having both recorded four wins and a solitary loss from their last five matches in all competitions. While there’s no doubt Ajax have had the brighter start to the domestic season, it’s like comparing apples with oranges (literally) given the gulf in quality between the Eredivisie and La Liga. These two clubs have met just twice in European cup competitions, with both matches taking place more than 15 years ago and each ending in a one-all draw. We might well have seen them appear in separate European cup finals earlier this year, too, if they hadn’t both been eliminated by English opposition in the semis.
Okay, so who’s going to edge it?
From defence right the way through to attack, Valencia have Ajax well beaten for pace. The Dutchmen’s sluggish back line will struggle to keep up with Guedes and Rodrigo, which will leave them very vulnerable on the break. Even the most agile of defenders have a hard time containing Valencia’s lightning-fast front men and – provided the Spaniards can stay solid at the back – a resounding home win could certainly be on the cards. All things considered, Valencia’s Spanish magic, along with a style of play quicker than Libertex’s transaction speeds (and that’s saying something!), should prove too much for an Ajax side that’s used to facing much weaker opponents.
