About Slack Technologies
Slack Technologies is a tech firm established by Flickr co-founder Stewart Butterfield whose products include a corporate messaging service that is tipped to be "the death of Skype" and a software-based collaboration hub. The messenger launched in beta mode back in 2013 and now boasts more than 1 million users.
The service is highly functional and is fully compatible with a range of third-party solutions, enabling its users to communicate with a large number of people simultaneously. Slack offers both paid and free versions of its software.
The app even has video calling, a feature it added following the company's 2015 acquisition of Screenhero.
After several investment rounds, Slack was able to attract funding from numerous big-name investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Accel Partners, the Social+Capital Partnership, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Google Ventures.
At its most recent funding round, the company was valued at over $5 billion.
Slack now with Dark Mode
In a recently released update, Slack Technologies has given its corporate messaging service a new theme, which it calls Dark Mode.
This new theme changes the app's colour scheme to dark grey, though certain details are still displayed in purple.
Dark Mode is currently only available on its Android and iOS versions, but the company is hoping to eventually extend it to its Windows and Mac users, too.
Installing this new theme wasn't the sole purpose of releasing the update, it also patched a number of the messenger's bugs.
Streaming service executive leaves to join Slack
Work-flow platform Slack has bolstered its management team with the addition of former Spotify VP Jonathan Prince. Now at Slack, Prince has taken on the joint roles of Head of Strategic Communications and Senior Advisor to the CEO.
He arrived at Spotify in 2014, going on to hold positions including Global Head of Communications and Public Policy, Head of Marketplace and Content Policy Manager.
Prior to joining the streaming service, he had served as an advisor to both the Clinton and Obama administrations.
